You’ve given “Hal” a more thoughtful response than his derisive aggression deserved; and as for letting down your ancestors, you more than honored their piety in 36 Arguments. We read that in my course Philosophy in Recent American Fiction last semester. I’ll mention it in Existentialism next fall, too. We are free to matter to ourselves, and to respect others’ right to decide for themselves what matters to them.
